How We Score Deals

Every TopShelf verdict is based on a structured 10-point rubric — not affiliate incentives, not platform hype.

Our Approach

TopShelf reviews each deal against a structured 10-point rubric that weights value for money heavily, alongside product quality, founder track record, refund policy, and community signal.

We aim to answer one question: is this deal worth your money right now, or will you regret it?

Our reviewers are independent — we have no financial relationship with the platforms or vendors we cover beyond standard affiliate commissions disclosed on every deal page.

Scoring Criteria

CriterionWeightWhat we evaluate
Problem–solution fit25%Does the tool solve a real, recurring problem? Is the LTD pricing meaningfully better than the subscription alternative?
Product maturity20%Is the product stable and actively maintained? Track record matters — we penalise pre-launch or v0.x products.
Founder/team signal15%Is there a credible team behind this? Bootstrapped LTDs fail at higher rates — we factor in founder visibility and responsiveness.
Value vs alternatives20%How does the lifetime cost compare to monthly subscriptions, free alternatives, or competing LTDs? We always calculate the break-even point.
Community & review signal10%What are verified buyers saying? We cross-reference AppSumo reviews, Trustpilot, Reddit, and G2.
Longevity risk10%Is there a realistic path for this company to survive long enough for the LTD to pay off? We flag deals where the business model is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who writes the TopShelf reviews?

Our editorial team researches each deal independently. We have no financial relationship with vendors at the time of review and receive no payment for positive scores.

How is the score calculated?

Each deal is scored 1–10 across six weighted criteria: problem–solution fit (25%), value vs alternatives (20%), product maturity (20%), founder signal (15%), community reviews (10%), and longevity risk (10%).

Does a higher AppSumo review count mean a higher TopShelf score?

Not necessarily. Community signal is one of six criteria and weighted at 10%. A tool with 3,000 AppSumo reviews can still score 5/10 if the longevity risk is high or the pricing is unfavourable.

How often are scores updated?

Scores are reviewed when there are significant product changes, pricing changes, or when new community data materially changes our assessment. The "last reviewed" date on each deal page reflects this.

What does "Not yet reviewed" mean?

We aggregate deals from AppSumo, Dealify, DealMirror, and StackSocial automatically. Deals appear in our index immediately, but editorial review takes time. We prioritise high-traffic deals first.
